Zagato rolls out a bespoke supercar with Alfa Romeo underpinnings

The famous Italian tuning company has come to the Villa d’Este event in Italy with the DoppiaCoda, a one-off vehicle created for a local car collector. It’s based on the already-rare Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione chassis, which exists in slightly more than 800 units worldwide including coupe and convertible variants, but bespoke bodywork makes it completely unique.

According to Zagato, the DoppiaCoda will become the tuner’s last project based on this iconic Alfa Romeo model lineup. With the 8C Competizione out of production since 2009, it’s no longer easy to find suitable examples.

But let’s take a closer look at the show exotic. It manages to bring together two design traits often seen, but never previously combined on any given Alfa Romeo: a shortened rear end known as the Kamm-Tail and a fixed, oval rear wing. Norihiko Harada, Zagato Chief Designer, explains that this particular car would look clumsy with a shorter rear end but no rear wing like the one seen here.

It is unclear whether anything under the hood has changed. The original car packed a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It made 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque, letting it sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds.
