BMW i7 becomes an art car

BMW brought a rather eye-catchy art car to the Frieze Seoul expo last week. Designed by famous artist Lee Kun-Yong, this custom i7 simultaneously celebrates 30 years of BMW presence in South Korea and 50 years of the automaker’s art car collection.

According to the Bavarian company, Lee Kun-Yong is one of his country’s most influential and avant-garde artists right now. He always incorporates human body motifs into his works, and the sedan depicted here is no exception. It is also being called “a mobile canvas” by its creator.

According to the automaker, the project reflects the “precision and intimacy” of the contact between the driver and the car. Finding inspiration in the exterior design and the technology of the i7, Lee Kun-Yong “draws parallels” with his own artistic experience. By studying the process of driving from various angles, he comes up with “dynamically interacting figurative and monochrome zones”, creating “a sense of intimacy and distance.”

The project is a part of the ongoing BMW Art Car World Tour. It features around two dozen vehicles painted by the most renowned modern artists and exhibited in various cities across Europe. As many as five models will be present at this year’s Goodwood festival in mid-September.
