BYD has begun taking pre-orders for the Bao 5 SUV, the first production car of its latest sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao. You can visit the Chengdu Motor Show and leave a reservation; later on, the model will get an international release under the name ‘Bao 5’.
According to Car News China, the off-roader starts from 300,000 Yuan and maxes out close to 400,000 – it isn’t cheap, but still not nearly as expensive as the rumored 400,000–600,000 Yuan.
The car is 4.9 meters long and supports approach and departure angles of 39 and 35 degrees, respectively. It also has an impressive ramp breakover angle of 27 degrees. DiSus-P Adaptive hydraulic-air suspension lets it auto-adjust ground clearance in a 140 mm (5.5-inch) range. When maxed out, the clearance amounts to 310 mm (12.1 inches).
The powertrain comprises two electric motors and a 1.5-liter engine acting as a power generator. A combined output of 680 PS (671 hp / 500 kW) enables the SUV to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds.
There is no battery size data, but the company says the Bao 5 has 1,200 km (745 miles) of driving range with a full gas tank at the start. Fuel economy averages at 7.8 liters per 100 km (30 MPG). Max towing capacity is 2.5 metric tons, or 5,500 pounds.
On the outside, the Bao 5 looks rather blatantly copied from the Land Rover Defender. It has two displays on the dash aside from a HUD, but retains physical buttons for those drivers who appreciate tactile feedback. An 18-speaker premium audio system by Devialet is included in the spec.
More details will be revealed closer to the sales start date, which should be announced soon.
