Daihatsu Tanto spins off a crossover-like version in Japan

Those in Japan who got tired of the traditional Kei car stylistic of the Daihatsu Tanto may grab its updated version called FunCross. Aside from SUV-like body kit and interior, it is identical to the other trims.

The Tanto is now available in three trim variants called Standard, Custom and FunCross. The differences mainly boil down to bumpers, grilles and headlights. The novelty complements the list with a contrasting black roof, roof rails and door moldings. Those in the market for some further customization may opt for one out of two OEM styling packages.

The interior boasts vivid highlights and camo patterns on the seat upholstery. A watertight material lines the entire trunk area and the backside of the rear sofa. The doors are automatic, and passengers in the second row have a USB socket for charging their gadgets.

On the outside, the DNGA-based Kei car is 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,775 mm tall. The engine is standard for this vehicle class at 660 cubic centimeters of displacement and 52 PS (51 hp / 38 kW) in its naturally aspirated version. Opting for turbo raises the output to 64 PS (63 hp / 47 kW). A CVT gearbox directs the torque to either the front wheels or all four – you can actually opt for AWD for your Tanto.

Prices for the standard version start at 1.24 million Yen and climb up to 1.79 million Yen with all the boxes checked. The FunCross trim will likely be a little bit costlier than that.
