Hyundai’s frame-based off-roader comes to challenge the Ford Bronco

Hyundai has come to the ongoing New York International Auto Show (NYIAS-2026) with an intriguing concept vehicle named the Boulder. Boasting a body-on-frame design, it is slated to reach mass production and eventually compete with the likes of Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

The Boulder runs on a new platform only shared with one other Hyundai model: an upcoming mid-size pickup truck destined for the North American market. It features a solid-beam rear axle, per-wheel front suspension and 37-inch mud tires installed as standard. The exterior is brutally geometric and boxy with flared fenders, multi-section headlights and a light rack above the windshield.

The cabin remains secret, but one detail probably deserves a special mention. The tailgate comes with a built-in power-assisted window and features a double-hinged design. This means you can swing-open it to the left OR to the right – the other pair of hinges detaches automatically.

All powertrain specifications are pending. Unofficial sources suggest that the Boulder will ship with a range-extender (EREV) powertrain based on a small-displacement petrol engine and two or more e-motors.

Hyundai’s plans for the next five business years involve launching as many as 36 new or refreshed models in the United States. Around 80% of these will be assembled locally.
