Lancia has begun testing the next generation of its Ypsilon hatchback expected to go on sale in early 2024. Judging by these images from Carscoops, it sports an unusual exterior and has a tea table or something similar on the transmission tunnel.
Since the official teaser of the car revealed earlier had shown the Ypsilon with a pronounced bar at the front end bracing the space between the bumper and the hood, the exterior design is still a work in progress. A glance at the rear reveals a large spoiler and an unusual sedan-like protrusion.
Inside, there is a compact head unit and seats wrapped in leather and velour. The latter must have been dictated by Lancia’s previously stated goal to liken the interior to a classic Italian living room, making it feel cozy and relaxing. The round thing below the infotainment display is most likely a mini-table. Lancia had announced it before, saying it would be known as ‘Tavolino’, but never specified its purpose. We suppose it could act as a wireless charging pad, among other possibilities.
From the technical point of view, the next-gen Ypsilon appears to be based on the same Stellantis platform as the latest Opel Corsa and Peugeot e-208. Both cars are in the same class as the Ypsilon, so it makes sense. The latter two pack a single e-motor with 156 PS (154 hp / 115 kW), sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in approximately 8 seconds, and cover around 400 km (250 miles) per charge.
A mild-hybrid variant of the Lancia Ypsilon may become available later as well.
