McLaren talks about its impending road-legal Le Mans car

Almost a year ago, McLaren announced a project named Endurance (see video), promising us to bring several dozen race cars onto the roads. We have now have some further details thanks to Drive Australia.

In his interview with the publication, Neil Underwood, McLaren Head of HyperTrack Cars, confirmed that the road-going version of the hypercar will share the chassis with the endurance racer being built for the next 24 Hours of Le Mans. Both are slated for debut in 2027, but it sounds like the earlier rumors about them being largely identical in design and tech were unfounded. According to Underwood, the street-legal supercar will make do with a simplified platform, transmission and handling – for safety reasons, as usual.

It will retain the original’s 2.9-liter V6 under the hood, but will ditch the electric system of the endurance racer. To compensate, it will receive a high-end turbocharger that will drive its output to an estimated 730 PS (720 hp / 537 kW). Slightly softer suspension, smoother gear shifts and numerous electronic assists and safeguards are also on the menu.

There’s been no word on pricing or availability yet. Unofficial sources claim a total of 35 cars will be made and offered starting from U.S. $5,000,000. What we do know on official terms is that all owners will gain admittance to McLaren’s client racing events on a number of famous racetracks all around the world, plus two years of advanced driving courses.
