Next Mercedes-Benz E-Class EV spied testing

Reports that Mercedes was preparing a next-generation E-Class sedan to run on electric power first came this spring, but the car spotted back then was a test mule still wearing EQE clothes. A much newer version has now hit the road, so let’s take a look at the photos posted on Carscoops.

The company’s idea of a new electric E-Class is surprisingly tame compared to the predecessor. It’s no longer shaped like a soap bar and actually looks like a modern Mercedes, particularly the latest GLC and C-Class. It features a rather elongated profile with a fairly flat hood and a moderate front overhang. The trunk looks short, but the rear overhang is rather long for an EV.

A closer look reveals stamped sides and traditional door handles, as well as fake trims concealing the true shapes of the lighting units at both ends and the windows at the sides. The grille seems to be partially camouflaged, too, but there’s a visible bulge where the central grille meets the hood, so we suppose it looks similar to the new GLC (see video).

It’s still too early to talk powertrains, but it cannot be ruled out that the new E-Class EV will get the same engine and battery setup as the GLC mentioned above. This means a 490-PS (483-hp / 360-kW) motor duo and a 95-kWh battery pack rated at 715 km (444 miles) of range.
