Mercedes-Benz launches new GLB generation

Customers in Germany can already preorder their GLB-Class in two all-electric versions. The base spec costs €59,048, while its dual-motor counterpart starts from €62,178. First deliveries will be made in spring, and hybrid options are coming later.

The new GLB resembles the old one but benefits from all-new body panels with low-drag sides, wide c-pillars and starry LED lights at both ends. The radiator grille retains its more or less traditional look, but you can option it with a starry pattern and backlight if you are into that sort of thing.

The whole SUV measures 4,732 mm (184.8 inches) long, 1,861 mm (72.7 inches) wide and 1,687 mm (65.9 inches) tall with 2,889 mm (112.9 inches) between the axles. That’s 60 mm (2.4 inches) of extra length and wheelbase compared to the old generation. The trunk fits 480 liters (16.95 cubic feet) of luggage, but expands to 1,715 liters (60.56 cubic feet) with the seats folded.

In its most basic spec called the 250+, the new GLB drives the rear axle with 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) and 335 Nm (247 lb-ft) of torque. It sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in a sluggish 7.4 seconds.

Opting for the more expensive 350 4Matic gets you 354 PS (349 hp / 260 kW), 515 Nm (380 lb-ft) of torque and a 5.5-second sprint time. Both versions are capped at 210 km/h (130 mph).

The battery holds 85 kilowatt-hours of juice and yields up to 631 km (392 miles) per charge, although the AWD version has to keep its front e-motor off in order to even get close to this number. Charging for 10 minutes replenishes enough power for another 260 km (161 miles).
