Porsche has released a documentary film called The Intern starring two-time Oscar winner Adrien Brody. You can watch the trailer here and find it online if interested. The highlight of the movie is a never-before-published early sketch of the Carrera GT envisioned as a coupe.
The Carrera GT went into production in 2004 and stayed there until 2007. It was offered exclusively as a roadster – or, to use a more accurate term, a Targa. Only 1,270 examples were made. Porsche admitted that work on the Carrera GT started back in the 1990s and had to do with the company’s motorsports program of the time. In the documentary, Brody travels to the Porsche factory in Stuttgart and talks with the workers there to find out about the history and heritage of the German brand.
Grant Larson, the director of Porsche’s special projects division, invites Brody to his garage and shows him his sketchbook that contains an early draft of a 1999 Carrera GT. Interestingly enough, it looks like a mid-engined coupe there – not unlike the 911 GT1. In fact, it resembles the latter more than it does the final Carrera GT. We also learn that the 5.7-liter V10 the model shipped with was also originally developed as a racing engine.
