Renault to limit its road-going cars to 180 km/h (112 mph)

After Volvo limiting the top speed of its cars to 180 kilometers per hour (112 mph) last year, Renault joins the club with the same initiative. Starting from 2022, no new Renault model will be able to accelerate past that hard limit.

The all-electric Megane-E, which currently exists as a concept, will be the first production car affected by the change. In addition to introducing the global speed limit, Renault also intends to let the cars automatically determine how fast they can go based on traffic signs and navigation data.

All Renault and Dacia cars sold in Europe will follow the example of the Megane-E in the near future; it remains unanswered whether countries outside of the EU will be affected. It is official, however, that Alpine – the brand that will soon start producing RS versions of Renault cars – will be exempt from the limit.
