Rivian adds a 700-HP power option to its EV lineup

Electric carmaker Rivian has introduced a new drivetrain called Performance Dual-Motor AWD. Combining high-end performance with plenty of range, it comes to replace the old quad-motor drivetrain and Max Pack traction battery (discontinued in late 2022).

Buyers of both the R1S SUV and the R1T pickup can already order them with this drivetrain. The two new electric motors are mounted one per axle and drive all four wheels with a combined 710 PS (700 hp / 522 kW) and 949 Nm (700 lb-ft) of torque. Regardless of the body style, the vehicle sprints 0-96.6 km/h (0-60 mph) in 3.5 seconds and has 644 km (400 miles) of range on a charge.

Those looking to save a bit of money may opt for a spec called Dual-Motor AWD (minus the ‘Performance’ suffix). It has the same range and delivers 608 PS (600 hp / 447 kW), taking 4.5 seconds for the standard sprint.

According to InsideEVs, the manufacturer has reached out to all customers who ordered the now-discontinued quad-motor/Max Pack spec and asked them to edit their orders choosing one of the available other options. The company said the total amount would be revised and discounts would be given to customers depending on their ordering date.

Specifically, those who reserved their R1S/R1T before March 1, 2022 are eligible for a $4,500 discount if they opt for the Dual-Motor AWD or $2,000 if they go for the Performance Dual-Motor AWD. Those who ordered between March 2 and May 25, 2022 will save $6,000 and $1,000, respectively.
