Check out a rare mid-engined Suzuki with gull-wing doors

Suzuki Cara is believed to have been released in a series of 530 or so units worldwide. It was an exotic compact car with gull-wing doors no unlike those of Mercedes-Benz vehicles of the era.

The example shown here is on sale right now, but the bidding has been slow and only reached $12,200 at the moment of writing with only a few hours left on the clock. Its high mileage could be to blame.

The Cara was designed for Japanese domestic market and fit the Kei car standards, meaning it used a tiny 657cc, three-cylinder engine to drive the wheels with 64 PS (63 hp / 47 kW) and 85 Nm (63 lb-ft) of torque through a five-speed manual transmission. The production started in 1993 and ended in 1995.

This particular coupe came with the first production batch 30 years ago and has since traveled 176,000 kilometers (a touch under 110,000 miles). The seller claims it remains in good condition. There are a few aftermarket mods installed, including a mild boost tune-up, a new multimedia system inside and 15-inch Rays wheels by Volk Racing in the arches.

Suzuki co-designed the Cara with Mazda (see video). The same vehicle is alternatively known as the Autozam AZ-1: that brand gave it a bigger production run of around 4,300 units.
