Toyota ushers in the Century Coupe

Toyota stays silent about the production prospects of its Century Coupe, but says it provides you with a glimpse of what will eventually become a whole sub-brand.

The car only has two doors, although there is also a sliding panel on the passenger’s side, and possesses a dynamic, fastback-like profile accentuated by the lack of a rear window. What little it has in common with Toyota’s current model lineup is all at the front end, but a bold bumper and a bulging hood with air intakes still make it look like its own thing.

Pixel LED headlights and a body-matching radiator grille also look rather original, and if you’ve been wondering what shade of orange that is, Toyota says it had to apply over 60 layers of paint to achieve this effect. A pity we don’t know anything about the powertrain or chassis.

The interior greets with rather subdued tones but has quite a selection of premium materials on display, including expensive textile, natural wool, and wood. There are only two seats. The driver gets a futuristic steering yoke and a handful of displays, some of them reminiscent of smartphone screens. A mechanical chronometer in the middle of the dash reminds us that this is a Century car, after all.

An illuminated curtain-like partition separates the driver’s cockpit from the rest of the cabin. The passenger’s seat is mounted at the rear left corner and can swivel towards the door for easier getting in and out. The space behind the driver’s seat is occupied by a “luggage pad” that looks like it might be used as an extra seat in a pinch. In addition to numerous storage pockets and niches, the cabin has a dedicated clothes-hanger and an umbrella recess.
