9th-gen Toyota Hilux premieres in Thailand

The latest-and-greatest Hilux pickup will go on sale in that country first, followed by the rest of Asia in 2026.

The Double Cab version – the only one on sale right now – is sized 5,320 x 1,855 x 1,800 millimeters (207.8 x 72.5 x 70.3 inches) large with 3,085 mm (120.5 inches) between the axles. That’s pretty much the same as in the old generation, with the wheelbase being exactly identical. Toyota doesn’t say so outright, but we have all reasons to suspect that the ninth generation retains the architecture of its predecessor.

As for the e-motors, they produce a combined 196 PS (193 hp / 144 kW), sourcing power from a 59.2-kWh, floor-mounted battery. Once fully charged, the electric truck is good for “more than 300 kilometers” (186 miles).

The EV version is the only one that’s debuted so far. A diesel is supposed to arrive sometime in 2026, but its parameters remain secret. Rumors say it will be packing a 2.8-liter engine with 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) or so, mated to an automatic transmission and either two or all four wheels. This remains to be confirmed.

In addition to the above, Toyota plans to introduce the mass market to a hydrogen fuel cell version of the Hilux. That one won’t arrive until 2028 and will be mainly confined to Europe when it finally does.

On the exterior side of things, the new Hilux EV for Asia sports a body and aggressive front fascia design with narrow-slight headlights and no fake grille of any kind. Some images show it with a bezel-free mesh where the grille usually is, so that could be the upcoming diesel version.

More of the same boxy, edgy styling can be found in the cabin, which houses a large head unit, a traditional transmission selector that Toyota usually redesigns for each specific powertrain, and quite a few physical buttons. There’s also a drive mode dial, and the diesel version has what looks like an AWD mode switch.
