The next generation of the Toyota Yaris hatchback premiered in Europe and Japan a few days ago. Some other markets, like South America and Eastern Asia, make do with a trimmed-down version of the same model, called the Yaris L.
Sales of the facelifted Yaris L just started in China. The hatchback still comes based on the previous-gen platform of the European Yaris and sports a long body (4,145 mm / 13.6 feet, hence the ‘L’ suffix). This generation has been in production for six years and received a facelift in most markets two years ago, leaving the Chinese version struggling behind – until now.
Comparing ‘before’ and ‘after’, you can see a new, larger radiator grille, slightly reshaped bumpers, and new headlights (LEDs available in the top trim version). The cabin stays the same.
Customers in China may now also opt for the new crossover-shaped Yaris L-X, which sports added ground clearance, protective padding, a different rear bumper, and roof railings. The drive stays on the front axle no matter what, though.
The refreshed Yaris L series still comes equipped with its old 1.5-liter non-turbo engine good for 110 hp (82 kW). Transmission choices include manual and CVT, but the L-X version is CVT-only.
