The Commercial Transports division of Volkswagen will be unveiling the next generation of its California motorhome on August 25, 2023. The vehicle is technically still a concept, but with the launch scheduled for 2024, it should be close to production. Here are two sketches of it along with select specifications.
The full reveal will take place at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf in Germany. 35 years ago, Volkwagen debuted the first California motorhome running on T3 Transporter underpinnings. The model has since found around 260,000 buyers worldwide.
The latest design iteration is based on the long-wheelbase, plug-in-hybrid Multivan T7 model shown in the rest of the gallery and the video here. While the details are lacking, the standard Multivan relies on an eHybrid powertrain for propulsion, which consists of a 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine and a single motor. The wheels get up to 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW). A 10.4-kWh traction battery yields around 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range.
As evidenced by the drawings, the RV still has a pop-up roof with extra beds underneath, as well as two awnings extendable from the sides. In the features department, the company mentions a tablet-shaped HVAC remote that can also be used to control interior lighting and access a variety of other in-car functions.
The production is officially set to begin in 2024. It will take place in Hannover, as usual.
