This first-gen Golf GTI might look like any other, but there is a formidable sleeper agent hiding under that disguise, one that easily makes north of 600 horsepower and reigns supreme on the drag strip.
Over the past few years, the three-door hatchback has participated in various racing events around Europe and attracted quite a bit of attention to itself during the RACE1000 in Germany last month. The secret of the build is in a single massive turbocharger driving the stock engine to around 610 PS (600 hp / 447 kW). Being a manual car, the GTI takes some skill to launch properly, but nailing the start can keep you head-to-head with the Lamborghini Aventador.
Watch the two videos to see the sleeper hot hatch take on a Mercedes-AMG GT, a Golf R Mk7 and the Lambo mentioned above. Not everything goes smoothly for the car, but it mostly hits 251 km/h (156 mph) at the end of its quarter-mile run.
