Volkswagen hits pause on producing Europe’s best-selling SUV and cabriolet

The Volkswagen T-Roc, earlier proclaimed this year’s sales hit in Europe, can no longer be produced at the VW factory in Setubal, Portugal. The reason is a shortage of engine parts, Automotive News reports referencing leaked internal documents.

Based on the correspondence the reporters got their hands on, the German automaker will be forced to halt all production at the factory for a few weeks starting in early September.

The reasons for it are unknown, but our best guess is that the company is suffering the consequences of a flood in Slovenia that reportedly hurt one of its key suppliers. Automotive News believes that part shortages may soon affect the production schedules of other VW models, too.

In earlier news, the T-Roc was recognized as Europe’s most demanded Volkswagen vehicle in January-June 2023, with both SUV and cabriolet body styles leading the sales charts. In July, it proceeded to become one of the overall best-selling cars in Europe. The soft-top version of the T-Roc is also being manufactured in Portugal, so it is likely to be affected, too.
