Volvo announces free home charging for its EVs, but there’s a catch

To promote electric vehicles in Sweden, Volvo will be compensating their owners all charging fees incurred when charging at home. The incentive comes from power company Vattenfall and may be expanded to other regions in the future.

The pilot program will start in 2026 and run for a year. It will be available to all Volvo EV buyers and leasers who sign a special contract with Vattenfall. All charging expenses generated by the EV will be reimbursed at the end of the month.

An important caveat to keep in mind is that they will count towards a 5,150-kWh annual EV power consumption limit. Once that quota exceeded, all charging will be subject to standard electricity rates. Volvo assures us that even a power-hungry SUV like the EX90 will be able to travel 25,000 kilometers (15,500 miles) on free energy before this becomes an issue, though.

Users will be able to track their charging dynamics via a smartphone app and set it up so that the car only charges in the hours with the lowest possible rates.

Moving forward, Volvo says it may offer something similar in other countries in Europe and beyond, but not until the pilot program is over. Markets where EV adoption is considered a priority will likely get it sooner than the more conservative markets.
