VW ID.Unyx 08 gets patented in China

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and IT has posted a series of photos of Volkswagen’s latest electric SUV for that country’s local market: the ID.Unyx 08. It looks quite unusual by the German brand’s standards and is set to go on sale with one- and two-motor powertrains.

The newcomer is full-sized at exactly 5 meters (195.3 inches) long, 1,954 mm (76.3 inches) wide and 1,688 mm (66 inches) tall with 3,030 mm (118.4 inches) between the axles. It has slim headlights and backlit badges at both ends, as well as frameless doors with modern pop-out handles. The latter is especially interesting, because Volkswagen doesn’t normally design cars like this for the rest of the world.

The tires measure 255/45 R21, and we have zero images of the interior to show you at the moment. On the upside, we already know that the base spec utilizes a single rear-axle motor with 313 PS (309 hp / 230 kW). It dual-motor counterpart adds a 190-PS (187-hp / 140-kW) unit to the front axle. Both receive power from a lithium-iron-phosphate battery manufactured by CATL. Its capacity remains to be disclosed, but the company claims it is enough for over 700 kilometers (435 miles) of CLTC-rated driving range.

Feature-wise, the company promises us a self-parking system capable of putting the SUV exactly into its designated parking spot after the driver gets out and walks away. An AI-powered assistant and over-the-air software updates are also on the list.

Volkswagen launched the Unyx sub-brand for the Chinese domestic market in mid-summer 2024. Its first release was the coupe-like ID.Unyx 06 SUV. When introducing the badge, the company said it had five different EVs planned for production, so three more remain to be announced.
