One of the earliest creations of famous Italian tuner Abarth, the Abarth 208 A Spyder further customized by coachbuilder Boano, is up for grabs at RM Sotheby’s right now priced at an eye-watering €795,000 (nearly $874,000).
Having been influenced by the American automotive fashion of the 1950s, which implied smooth aerodynamic bodies and in particular tailfins, some Italian automakers felt they should try something similar. Abarth was one of them, coming to the 1955 Turin Motor Show with not just one, but three such concept cars – the 207 A seen in the video here, the 209 A, and the 208 A that’s now looking for a new owner.
Aside from a rather extravagant-looking body with an aerodynamic hump over every wheel arch, the car ended up with some posh interior trim. It is still in decent condition given its age, based on the photos. As for the powertrain and the chassis, they were sourced from a common Fiat 1100 of the era. This means that the unique ride utilizes a 1.1-liter four-cylinder mill to drive the rear wheels with 66 PS (65 hp / 49 kW).
The listing mentions three owners and some mileage both in Europe and in the USA. It remains to be seen whether there are any buyers who find the asking price adequate.
