America’s largest Shelby replica maker goes bankrupt, but business lives on

As you may remember, Florida-based Classic Recreations announced halting all work on existing orders and getting ready for insolvency proceedings a few months ago. The defunct company, which held a license for producing continuation vehicles under the Shelby American brand, has now been absorbed by another local retro car specialist – Velocity Restorations.

It's official now that Velocity gets to inherit the assets of Classic Recreations, and we hear that a license has been renewed with Shelby to keep making these replicas. In essence, it means that Velocity will now be the go-to name for those who want a fresh-off-the-line Shelby Mustang Mach 1, GT500 or Cobra built using historically accurate materials and OEM blueprints.

There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding the company’s obligations before customers who ordered their ride from CR only to discover it going bankrupt. Velocity claims that it will contact these customers individually and let them decide how to better proceed with their unfinished order. At the same, the official website states that Velocity shall not be liable for any “previous contracts or financial commitments made by Classic Recreations.” Here’s hoping it’s just a legally safe way of saying, “We can’t make too many promises, but will try to salvage your order as best we can.”

One way or another, the production of Shelby classics in the United States is set to continue now that’s the crisis has seemingly blown over. Velocity says it’s already filled out its production schedule for the next year, but can take your order now if you agree to wait for it to be delivered sometime in 2027.
