German automaker BMW has opened pre-orders for the next-gen X5 xDrive45e PHEV. The crossover SUV is currently only available in Europe, with the USA launch scheduled for 2020.
The plug-in hybrid system incorporates a 3.0-liter gas engine rated at 282 hp (210 kW) and an electric motor churning out another 110 hp (82 kW). The 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint is a matter of 5.6 seconds, and 235 km/h (146 mph) is reported to be the maximum attainable speed.
What is more impressive, though, is how well the car performs in the electric area. For one thing, its all-electric driving range amounts to 87 kilometers (54 miles). For another, its fuel consumption lies in the 1.2l – 1.9l range per 100 kilometers traveled. Converted into miles per gallon, this would mean 148 – 235 MPG in Great Britain and 124 – 196 MPG in the United States. Pretty amazing, really.
In its most basic form, the new BMW X5 xDrive45e ships with air suspension and a special sound warning system that alerts the passers-by and the cyclists to the otherwise silent electric vehicle. Integral Active Steering is available as an option.
