Bugatti’s next hypercar gets a humongous meter-long engine

The French automaker plans to equip its next track weapon with a naturally aspirated engine a whole meter (39 inches) long. That’s 400 mm (15.6 inches) longer than the Chiron’s W16 cylinder block, by the way.

The corresponding announcement has been made by Mate Rimac, CEO of the Bugatti-Rimac joint venture. The car itself should be ready for its premiere in June.

Rimac added that, despite having an entirely different powertrain layout, the new Bugatti will remain perfectly recognizable as such and will look only marginally different from the Chiron.

Spy shots from before showed a camouflaged prototype of the car that had Bugatti’s trademark C-shaped sides – you can find it at the end of the gallery below.

Commenting on this new, still unnamed hypercar, Rimac admitted that the original idea was to produce something different – not a hypercar as such, but rather something like an electric coupe-SUV. It would have been easier, too, because the company could have reused the Rimac Nevera chassis for it. However, in the end, the CEO decided that Bugatti needed to stay true to its brand identity, and that unambiguously meant “another hypercar”.

He also opted for the giant V16 because he reasoned that Bugatti cars needed to stand out from the rest of the industry every bit as much as they could.
