Meet the Yangwang U8, the first premium e-SUV from a new BYD sub-brand

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a new premium vehicle brand called Yangwang. The marque will specialize in all-electric cars, like the U8 off-roader introduced earlier this week.

The U8 is a hardcore body-on-frame SUV powered by a quartet of electric motors joining efforts for a combined 1,100 PS (1,085 hp / 809 kW). Despite its bulky exterior, the car darts from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds flat. Drivers take advantage of four-wheel steering and can even do a full standing turn (‘tank turn’) thanks to the four motors operating independently from each other.

There is a slew of dedicated driving modes for water obstacles, sand, dirt and snow. A look at the front end reveals a faux grille merged with H-shaped headlights. The fenders are boxy, and the wheels measure 20 inches across.

It is unknown when the Yangwang U8 may go on sale, but media in China are reporting that it will cost more than 100,000 USD.
