BYD has announced the pricing applied to its new Yangwang U8 SUV in China. The vehicle rocks an electric powertrain rated at 1,100 PS (1,085 hp / 809 kW) and starts from 1,096,000 Yuan, or $160,000 USD. That’s the highest any China-made frame-based SUV has ever cost.
At the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show, the Yangwang U8 is represented in two main versions, one for urban driving and the other one for off-roading. Both variants cost exactly the same, although the latter has accessories such as a snorkel pipe and an expedition rack installed.
A new supercar named the U9 will soon join the Yangwang lineup on the domestic market. The manufacturer says the powertrain will be identical to that of the U8, but the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time will go down from 3.0 to just 2.0 seconds thanks to lower weight.
