BYD Sea Lion 08 bows in Beijing

Although billed as a full-size luxury SUV EV concept, the Sea Lion 08 is destined to become a production vehicle soon, so let’s take a closer look at the specs.

Coming in at 5,115 mm (201.4 inches) long with 3,030 mm (119.3 inches) between the axles, the crossover is shaping up to become the next BYD flagship. It is envisioned as a five-seater with two rows inside and a six-seater with three rows of two individual seats.

If the exterior looks familiar, that’s because the newcomer draws inspiration from the last year’s Ocean S Concept. Among other things, it features the same wavy front end with curved DRLs and multi-section headlights. The LiDAR seen above the windshield belongs to the car’s ADAS package known as the God’s Eye 5.0.

When it goes on sale in China, the Sea Lion 08 will be available in BEV and hybrid forms. The former will send 653 PS (644 hp / 480 kW) to all four wheels from its two e-motors, and will cover up to 900 kilometers (559 miles) per charge, CLTC-rated. The plug-in hybrid has yet to be fully revealed, but the automaker claims it will have 400 km (248 miles) of range.

Aside from this new flagship, BYD brought a futuristic-looking minivan to Beijing. Known as the Ocean V Concept, it had plenty of ground clearance and four seats inside. The company made it clear that it was just a design study and not a production-ready model.
