Chevrolet Camaro may morph into a 1,000-hp SUV

Chevrolet is actively considering bringing back the Camaro after its retirement in December 2023, reports Motor Trend USA. Just how it can be done remains to be decided, though.

Rumors are coming in that General Motors wants an electric SUV to compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It may end up based on the BEV3 platform also underpinning the Chevrolet Blazer EV and other GM-branded electric vehicles. In fact, it may share most of its components with the Blazer including the drivetrain (RWD/AWD, up to 300 horsepower, either 85 or 102 kWh of battery capacity).

The same unofficial sources claim that Chevrolet wants a sported-up modification of this Camaro SUV. It may end up called Camaro SS (which means Super Sport) and have similar specs to the existing Blazer EV SS, but possibly a bit higher. One source goes as far as to claim that the main powertrain being considered has 623 PS (614 hp / 458 kW) and 880 Nm (650 lb-ft) of torque.

Last but not least, a Camaro ZL1 EV is also under consideration. What used to be a muscle car with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 under the hood may end up reborn as a three-motor SUV running on the same underpinnings and power as the GMC Hummer EV.

Back in June, General Motors claimed a trademark “Panther”. That codename belonged to the original Camaro while it was still in development. A year ago, GM CEO Mark Reuss also said that the Camaro could make an eventual comeback as an affordable EV. He declined the notion that it could be an SUV and a Ford Mustang Mach-E rival, however.
