China’s Tesla Semi killer gets primed for launch

BAIC Group attended the last year’s Guangzhou Auto Show to introduce a new commercial vehicle brand Cavan (see video). It has now revealed its first production truck – a still-unnamed model with unmistakable Tesla Semi looks, a hydrogen/electric powertrain and loads of modern features on board.

The manufacturer claims that the truck can run off liquefied or regular compressed hydrogen gas, as well as top up its battery from any conventional EV charging outlet. The tanks take only 15 minutes to refill, while the battery regains 100 kilometers (62 miles) of range per 8 minutes of charging using a 1-megawatt (1,000-kW) source.

Full powertrain specs remain to be announced, but we already know that the combined power of the Cavan semi comes to 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW). Drivers will appreciate to know that there are two dozen electronic assists on board, airbags, an AI-powered infotainment assistant, and a particularly spacious sleeping area. The interior actually resembles that of BAIC passenger cars with its abundance of displays and squared-off steering wheel.

All availability and pricing details are pending.
