Ferrari’s first sub-7-minute Nürburgring car is a 296 GTB

A Ferrari 296 GTB completed the entire 20.8-kilometer-long North Loop track in 6 minutes 58.7 seconds, becoming the marque’s first vehicle to show a sub-7-minute result on Germany’s most dreaded circuit.

The record-breaking run was attempted by Sport Auto test driver Christian Gebhardt back in April, but the corresponding video proof was only posted on YouTube late last week.

The 296 GTB is a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive Berlinetta powered by a part-electric system based on a 3.0-liter V6. The output maxes out at 830 PS (819 hp / 610 kW). An optional package called Assetto Fiorano was installed in order to improve aerodynamics and drop the dry weight to 1,470 kilos (3,240 pounds). Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R semi-slick tires were used.

According to fastestlaps.com, Ferrari’s previous best time on the Nürburgring was set by a 488 Pista also piloted by Gebhardt. It crossed the finish line in 7 minutes 0.03 seconds.
