Carado unveils its first 4WD campervan on record

Carado, a German marque of affordable campers for active leisure and travel enthusiasts, had only dealt with 2WD van conversions before. This limited its appeal for customers interested in veering off the trodden path every so often. Everything changed this week with the introduction of the CV590 4×4.

The base vehicle is a Ford Transit armed with a torque-happy diesel engine producing 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW). The manufacturer claims the AWD advantages are especially evident in colder, wetter weather when road traction becomes crucial. That said, we would imagine it being at least as competent off-road.

The interior is almost six meters (19.7 feet) long and comprises a storeroom in the back, a sleeping area for two, a living room, a shower cabin and a kitchen with a space-saving tapered tabletop, a fridge and two gas burners. Possible options include solar panel prepping (wiring only), a bike rack, wooden floor lining for the shower, and a third bed that doubles as a sofa during the day.

In its most standard form, the CV590 4×4 EDITION24 starts at €69,000. Watch the video for an in-depth look at an older but similar model, the CV540.
