Ford recalls nearly 2 million cars over camera safety concerns

The Blue Oval has initiated a recall campaign in the United States that will see as many as 849,310 Bronco and Edge models get checked for rear-facing camera issues, NHTSA reports. The same applies to 889,950 examples of the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair.

Apparently, the video feed from the reversing camera may spontaneously disappear from the screen, creating a potentially dangerous situation. As for the Escape and the Corsair, their display image may randomly get flipped upside down, confusing the driver trying to maneuver around a tight spot.

The disappearance issue is linked to the camera controller unit overheating – likely due to the proximity of the HVAC system. The image flipping glitch is purely software-related. However, Ford says it expects to be able to address both in an upcoming software update – no hardware modifications necessary. Just when that may get released is still unknown.

One of the most recent vehicles affected seems to be the Ford Bronco RTR, a special edition co-developed between Ford and RTR Vehicles (see video).
