Genesis approves Magma GT into production, plans a whole family

Genesis, the premium division of Hyundai Motor Group, is planning a further move upmarket with its Magma sub-brand. First introduced in March 2024, it now has a clear concept moving forward.

According to Genesis Design Director Luc Donckerwolke, the company plans to base its most exclusive and performance-packed sports cars on the Magma GT Concept (see video). It will provide the basis for a coupe with supercar-like dynamics, a cabriolet and a dedicated GT3 lineup including both road-legal and track-only modifications. While most Magma vehicles will be drivable on public roads, the marque will nonetheless try to compete with the best brands out there by entering high-profile motorsports events over the next several years.

No specific numbers have been disclosed to date, but Donckerwolke confirmed that at least some models will be powered by modern V8 engines. Fully-electric may or may not be an option in the future, but hybrid powertrains are being actively looked into.

The Magma sub-brand will be funded for 10 years, after which Hyundai Motor Group will decide its fate going forward. Its first production vehicle, the SUV known as the GV60 Magma, is slated to reach the showrooms next year riding on the Genesis GV60 platform.
