The record-breaking Honda Civic was a ‘Type RS’, not Type R

Recently, we reported that Honda set a new Nürburgring lap record in the FWD Production Car category with a Civic Type R, Apparently, per the manufacturer’s website in Europe, the actual car was not a Type R, but rather a Type RS – which remains unannounced at the time of writing.

The company specifies that it is a special lightweight edition of the Civic for Europe, but names no prices or availability dates. Carscoops tapped into its own sources and learned that the RS is a slimmer, trimmed-down version of the R. Allegedly, it comes without a navigator, an AC, parking assistance and dimmable rearview mirror to keep the weight at a minimum. The side mirrors are also basic and lack adjustments or power-folding mechanisms.

It is unknown how much lighter the new hot hatch is. It also remains to be seen whether it has any changes in the suspension department. The Nürburgring car had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tires on, for example. Customers in Asia and the United States can buy these tires from Honda dealerships, but in Europe, they are only available from Michelin directly.
