Chinese hybrid smashes through a range record

Chinese premium automaker Hongqi has reported its HS6 hybrid SUV setting an official Guinness Book record by running 2,327 kilometers and 343 meters (1,446.14 miles) on plug-in hybrid power.

According to Autohome.cn, the car goes on sale in China on November 15, so the record was well-timed. The test run began on October 30 and involved driving from Shangri La all the way to Guangzhou using public roads. The crew arrived there on November 3.

Those looking to buy the Hongqi HS6 PHEV will be choosing from two powertrain options – 2WD with 228 PS (225 hp / 168 kW) and AWD with 502 PS (495 hp / 369 kW). Both are based on the same 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) and 225 Nm (166 lb-ft). Depending on the battery size, all-electric ranges may vary from 152 to 250 km (94.5–155 miles).

With a full tank, the maximum range is OEM-rated at an impressive 1,650 km (1,025 miles). If the actual range is even better as the Guinness record suggests, then it’s good news for all PHEV enthusiasts out there. All prices are pending.

Since late 2024, the record in this category had belonged to Chery’s Fulwin A8L sedan. It managed to cover 2,369 kilometers and 915 meters (1,472.6 miles) in hybrid mode. It’s worth pointing that Chery estimated its range quite close to that number – at 2,100 km, or 1,305 miles.
