The Hyundai India website has announced a new crossover utility vehicle named Exter. According to Autocar India, the car will slot in under the Venue, becoming the marque’s cheapest and smallest CUV on that market. The production is set to begin in summer.
Quite unusually for Hyundai, the Exter sports a rather boxy body with a rectangular radiator grille, a quasi-3D grille pattern and H-shaped headlights. One of the possible explanations of why it looks so unlike other cars in the lineup is that the company wants to target active leisure and travel enthusiasts.
It is assumed that the Exter will share the platform with the affordable Grand i10 Nios hatchback, although it might as well benefit from the more advanced tech of the Hyundai Venue. Either way, it is expected to be smaller than the 3.9-meter-long Venue and larger than the Hyundai Casper for Korea.
The engine range will likely start with a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated mill rated at 83 PS (82 hp / 61 kW) and also include a 1.0-liter turbo option with around 100 PS (99 hp / 74 kW) at its disposal. The default transmission will be manual, but automatic should be available, too. All-wheel-drive seems unlikely at this price point.
The Hyundai Exter is expected to reach the showrooms in India in August. It remains to be seen whether it will be exported to any other markets.
