Hyundai has begun posting teasers dedicated to its upcoming Ioniq 5 flagship. The first video chooses to focus on handling instead of acceleration, showing the electric car performing drift stunts on ice and snow next to the rally-tuned Hyundai i20 N WRC.
The footage comes form the company’s proving grounds in Arjeplog, Sweden, where the temperatures dropped to -30 ºC (-22 ºF) during the test drive. A crew of Hyundai N engineers tasked with optimizing the chassis and the powertrain said the Ioniq 5 N was the first production EV and the first mass-produced AWD car they worked with.
Thanks to a feature called N Drift Optimizer, the electronics on board can automatically distribute the torque between the axles, adjust shock absorber stiffness, fine-tune the steering wheel turning force and imitate a limited-slip differential. The manufacturer claim the feature lets even inexperienced drivers feel like real drift racers.
Little is known about the powertrain at the moment. One theory says the company will reuse the same motors it installed on the Kia EV6 GT, but with a boost to over 600 horsepower (450 kilowatts) so that the first N-series electric car stands out from the rest of the lineup.
The official launch remains scheduled for July this year. Since the caption of the video is ‘Episode 1’, more Ioniq 5 N vids should be coming soon.
