The new Lotus Type 136 weighs less than 10 kilograms because it isn’t a car – it’s an electric bicycle. The £20,000 asking price buys you a mint VW Polo in the UK, but that’s beside the point.
The entire bike frame is made of carbon fiber, explaining the record-low weight. The drivetrain is also quite unique: it comprises a single HPS electric motor and a battery pack masquerading as a water bottle. The former weighs as little as 0.3 kg (0.66 lbs) and the latter isn’t much heavier at 1.2 kg (2.64 lbs).
The first production batch will comprise 136 units, each equipped with a special, racing-style steering wheel and frame. A more affordable version of the bike is scheduled to reach the market in the spring of 2024.
