Italian carmaker Maserati decided to test its mettle in the Formula E racing championship and designed a dedicated all-electric racer for that purpose alone. It is officially the marque’s first track-only EV on record.
The firstborn known as Tipo Folgore wears a mostly blue livery, which highlights its electric nature and makes a nod to the brand’s other Folgore-series cars. National flag motifs and white stripes create the necessary contrast.
Per the regulations, the car is capped at 476 PS (469 hp / 350 kW) of output. The powertrain has two motors installed, but only the rear one drives the wheels: the front one is used exclusively to generate power, allegedly giving the racer up to 40% of the total energy needed for the race.
The Tipo Folgore is also surprisingly light at 840 kilograms (1,850 pounds) with the driver in, and can attain a respectable top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph). Maserati plans to repurpose some of its software and tech features for its future mass-market EVs.
