The upcoming Mazda CX-70 SUV will borrow its engine lineup from the already-selling CX-90 flagship, AutoGuide claims quoting a spec sheet submitted to a patent office in California. If true, it means the CX-70 will get two different 3.3-liter six-pots and a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain to choose from.
Note that the gallery and the video below depict the CX-90, because the CX-70 has yet to be formally revealed. The spec sheet also only briefly lists the names of the engines, but not their specifications. Still, it would make sense for the new SUV to get every bit as much power and torque as its senior cousin. This means 270 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) in the most basic spec and 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) in the most powerful version. AutoGuide also claims that all-wheel-drive is listed as standard for all specs.
If the new SUV gets the same drivetrain as the CX-90, it will most likely be faster than the flagship owing to its lesser weight and size. Rumor has it the CX-70 will be offered exclusively in North America as a five-seater, while Europe will get a different model named CX-80, possibly a range-topper on that market.
Mazda had originally intended to introduce a new SUV sometime in 2023, but never did for some reason. The premiere is now expected in 2024.
