Video: Stirling Moss’ Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR makes one last trip around London

Mercedes-Benz has published a short video titled The Last Blast, starring the legendary 300 SLR model with chassis number 722 on its final drive around London before permanent retirement in the company museum.

The video was filmed in late September to honor the memory of Stirling Moss, famous racing driver who passed away aged 90 in last April. An archived video fragment is included in the film featuring Moss calling the 300 SLR ‘the greatest sports car in all history.’ Other than that, the filming crew consisted of over 50 people, including eight police officers of motorbikes escorting the valuable exhibit. Cinema makers with Bond movie background also took part in the shoot.

Back in 1955, Stirling Moss and his team drove a 300 SLR with the chassis number 722 during the legendary Mille Miglia race. It is believed that the race itself started at 7:22 AM that year. It took the crew only 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds to complete the entire run from Brescia to Rome, setting a new world record.

Despite the racing event being inherently Italian, the filming took place in London, where Moss spent around six decades of his life. The venerable racecar made a tour of all the major landmarks and places that played a role in the legendary racer’s life. Among other things, the video briefly focuses on another 300 SL, a road-legal model that the sports man drove from London into Italy that year. In the end, the car arrives at the house where Moss lived, the clock showing 7:22 AM and the driver’s son, Elliott Moss, meeting the escort with his father’s watch on his wrist.
