Two months after introducing the E Performance sub-brand for electrified cars, Mercedes-AMG has now delved into the specifics of what we should expect and when.
The main hybrid powertrain to be used will be roughly the same as that of the four-year-old Mercedes-AMG GT Concept. A four-liter, twin-turbo M 117 AMG V8 will team up with a 10-kW starter/generator built into a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT, a rear-mounted electric engine, an electronic diff lock, and a dual-range reduction gear.
The above configuration should facilitate the initial launch, enable faster cornering, and optimize per-axle distribution of weight. The electric motor in this setup will be able to produce up to 201 PS (198 hp / 148 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, while the total may sum up to 816 PS (805 hp / 600 kW). A sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) will be possible in less than three seconds.
A 6.1-kWh traction battery will be rated at 400V and will consist of 560 individually cooled cells. As a result, it should not overheat even during prolonged racetrack driving.
A similar powertrain will be offered based on a wallet-friendlier 2.0-liter turbo four-pot. The main engine should produce nearly 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW), and the electric motor should add 201 PS (198 hp / 148 kW) of its own. The next-gen C-Class AMG should get this powertrain.
On top of all this, the Affalterbach-based performance car maker plans to launch a pure battery EV later this year. This one is a complete mystery so far.
