This 30-year-old Mercedes G-Class restomod will switch gears for you

Expedition Motor Company was among the businesses that pioneered classic SUV restoration in the United States, and is now experienced enough to try something new and challenging. One example would be this 1991 Mercedes G-Class with an automatic gearbox under the metal.

Called the 250GD Wolf 2022, it is technically a restomod with a rebuilt, repainted body, upgraded suspension and brakes, and differential locks at both axles. One such vehicle takes no less than 1,400 hours to produce, EMC says.

A peek inside the cabin reveals seats wrapped in rugged all-weather vinyl, air conditioning, an infotainment system with wireless Apple gadget support, and seat heating in both rows.

For the engine, the tuner recommends installing the Mercedes OM602 inline-six diesel, a unit renowned for its long service life and reliability. A silent and smooth five-speed automatic is tasked with carrying the torque to all wheels, but you can order a five-speed manual gearbox if you would rather row your own gears.
