Next-gen Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross reaches production in Europe

After the announcement in May this year, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is finally ready to debut with all technical specifications and details. The company says it will soon start rolling off the assembly line in France, but preorders won’t open until closer to the end of the year.

The new Eclipse Cross borrows its platform, bodywork and powertrains from the Renault Scenic E-Tech. As such, it is an all-electric vehicle with little to set it apart from its Renault cousin. It is 4,470 mm long with 2,785 mm of wheelbase and between 478 and 1,670 liters of trunk space. The exterior looks almost the same as the Scenic E-Tech except for the front end, which Mitsubishi claims was redesigned according to its “Dynamic Shield” styling language. There’s a prominent front grille, a rather large bumper with a matching air intake and new headlights, to name just a few. The c-pillars boast chrome trims, the brake lights sport original light patterns and custom wheels up to 20 inches large are available for ordering, but that’s about it for the differences.

The interior hasn’t been revealed in full just yet, but everything we’ve seen so far screams “Renault copy”. This goes for the 12- and 12.3-inch displays, the center console with physical buttons and the squared steering wheel. In fact, trim options might be the only original thing in the new Eclipse Cross. Mitsubishi also mentions immersive ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon audio system and a dimmable panoramic roof under paid options.

Sales in Europe will start with the flagship spec. It packs a single electric motor rated at 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and relies on an 87-kWh battery pack to get over 600 km (373 miles) of range. This sounds in line with the 610 km (379 miles) of the Scenic E-Tech.

Later on, Mitsubishi promises to launch an entry-level spec with so far undisclosed characteristics. If we were to take a guess, it would command 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW) and 60 kWh of battery capacity for 420 km (261 miles) of range. At least, this is what its Renault twin brings to the table.
