Unique dual-engine Ford Model A hits auction this week

A one-off Ford Model A “The Ballard Special” still running on its original chassis from 1930 will cross the auction block in the UK on Wednesday, April 24. It features a custom body and draws power from two four-cylinder engines synced to run as a single inline-eight. The expected selling price is between £60,000 and £80,000 ($74,200 and $98,600).

Tobias Ballard from Model A Revival created this exotic in the present day by linking two inline-four engines to work together. The company has been building restomods based on Ford classics for around 12 years now, but hadn’t done anything like this before.

The engineers also took care to bore out both 3.3-liter cylinder blocks to get 7.2 liters of displacement in total. They bumped the output of each engine from the original 24 to 80 metric horsepower, ending up with 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) heading to the wheels. Considering that the speedster weighs just 750 kilograms (1,653 lbs), that’s a lot of power to handle.

It took approximately two years to complete the build. Impressively enough, the dual-engine Model A is completely street-legal in the UK.
