New Onvo L90 is an affordable EV if you rent the battery

Nio has unveiled a new full-size SUV in China –the Onvo L90. It is coming to the local market in three configurations, two trim versions and two powertrains to choose between. The base spec costs a low 179,800 Yuan (~25,000 USD) as long as you opt for renting the traction battery from the manufacturer instead of buying one outright.

The SUV is sized 5,145 x 1,998 x 1,786 mm large with 3,110 mm between the axles. It has three seat rows and either six or seven seats depending on the trim. The trunk is only good for 430 liters of luggage (15.2 cubic feet), but there’s also a 240-liter (8.5-cu.ft.) frunk.

In its most affordable guise, the Onvo L90 comes equipped with a single rear-mounted motor rated at 462 PS (456 hp / 340 kW). You can pay a premium to get a dual-motor version with 136 PS (134 hp / 100 kW) going to the front axle. The RWD variant is a decent sprinter with a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 5.9 seconds, but its AWD counterpart reaches the same speed in 4.7 seconds.

The only battery pack announced so far holds 85 kilowatt-hours of energy and delivers either 570 or 605 km (354 or 376 miles) of range depending on the motor count. Charging from 10 to 80% takes roughly 25 minutes.

The infotainment system inside runs on Snapdragon 8295P hardware with up to 24 GB of RAM and boasts a 17.2-inch display. Nio offers multiple audio system options with up to 23 speakers in total. The rear seat occupants get a touchscreen panel built into the middle armrest and a ceiling-mounted TV the same size as the main display. You may opt for a rather spacious fridge that can be configured to maintain a specific temperature even when the EV is parked.
