Next-gen Nissan Serena bows in Japan with improved looks and features

Japanese automaker Nissan has introduced the next-gen Serena Minivan on its home market, revamping the engine lineup and introducing new technologies. The sales are already running.

In terms of driving aids, the car now benefits from ProPilot 2.0, an advanced autopilot system that enables drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while going above 40 km/h (25 mph) on certain highway stretches.

On the outside, the new Serena looks more in line with the rest of the modern Nissan lineup and even references the all-electric Ariya in parts. It sports a large V-shaped grille at the front with decorative LEDs at the sides, slim headlights and prominent bumpers.

Inside, new additions include two large displays and a HVAC control panel installed on the center console where the gear lever used to be. The buyers can still choose between 7 and 8 seats, as usual.

As of right now, the new generation can be purchased only as a range-extender hybrid propelled by a 163-PS (161-hp / 120-kW) electric motor. A traditional combustion engine with 98 PS (97 hp / 72 kW) is also present, but exists solely to generate electricity for the main motor. Later on, Nissan will be adding another hybrid to the lineup.
