Great Wall approves its Mecha Dragon e-saloon into production

Great Wall Motor Company has chosen to reboot its Sar Mecha Dragon project, turning it from an exclusive collectable car into an actual mass-market EV. According to Car News China, the luxury sedan inspired by the video game Mega Man 2 from the late 1980s will reach the market wearing the Ora badge. The company has already supplied its main specs, although no launch date or pricing info.

In its production form, the Mecha Dragon will resemble its prototype dating back to the year 2021 (see video). Back then, Great Wall had intended to produce exactly 101 such EVs priced from 488,800 Yuan ($68,800) each. Packing two motors joining their efforts for 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) and 763 Nm (563 lb-ft) of torque, it was envisioned as a modern-age alternative to a performance car powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8.

The company also promised us sub-3-second acceleration and up to 802 km (498 miles) of CLTC-rated driving range from a 115-kWh traction battery on board – although perhaps not at the same time. Anyway, charging should not be a major issue with support for 480kW sources.

Aside from all this, the Mecha Dragon will go on sale with LED matrix headlights, a pop-up rear wing, Brembo brakes working in tandem with a regenerative brake system, and electronic shock absorbers. Inside, there will be a dual-spoke steering wheel and separate displays for the infotainment system and the dashboard. The semi-autonomous driving assist uses 38 different sensors, including as many as four expensive LiDARs. Last but not least, the car benefits from a 16-channel Harman Kardon audio system with two speakers built straight into the driver’s headrest. Aside from playing back quality audio, the system can be set to imitate ICE engine sounds.
