Porsche and Google have taken their cooperation to the next level, announcing an in-depth integration of Google Services into Porsche sports cars. The German carmaker hopes to deliver the new features by the middle of the decade.
In practical terms, it means all Porsche cars will come with preinstalled Google Maps, its voice assistant and access to a host of Google Apps. At the same time, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system will retain its original user interface and continue to receive regular online updates from the manufacturer. Since it isn’t pure Android, Porsche calls the upcoming ecosystem ‘mixed’.
Moving forward, Porsche car owners will be able to receive digital solutions from various third-party vendors via standardized interfaces and platforms. The German company says it hopes for long-term cooperation with Google.
Porsche was a bit late to the party with Android Auto support, only adding it in 2021 with the update of its PCM infotainment system to version 6.0. In its current form, the software suite includes a number of preinstalled Apple services.
